On October 22, 2023, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new method for the contraceptive injection called Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate).
Depo-Provera was approved in the United States in March 2002 for the treatment of, a rare sexually transmitted disease (STD). The method was also being studied for other types of birth control methods, including condoms and oral contraceptives, among other methods.
While this method is used as the first FDA-approved method of contraception, it also is currently the only method of birth control that has been approved for the treatment of, a sexually transmitted disease. The method has been on the market for more than 15 years, with most pharmacies offering Depo-Provera without a prescription.
The method works by releasing the progestin into your body, allowing your body to absorb the medication. You may also experience some unwanted side effects when using this method.
However, the contraceptive injection is most effective when used as directed. It’s not recommended for use for more than 3 days. The injection is only for a short period of time.
There are several precautions to consider when using Depo-Provera.
Before using Depo-Provera, it’s important to know all of the potential risks and contraindications of the method. Here are some key precautions to consider:
1. Allergic Reactions:Do not use Depo-Provera if you have a known allergy to progestin or any other estrogen or progestin. You should not use Depo-Provera if you are allergic to the estrogen or progestin. If you experience any side effects while using Depo-Provera, stop using the injection and contact your health care provider.
2. Pregnancy:The progestin medication, including Depo-Provera, can be harmful to a pregnant woman if not used correctly. You should use a reliable method of contraception such as condoms, oral contraceptives, or a diaphragm (injectable solution) while you are using Depo-Provera.
3. Concerns About Birth Control Methods:While the method may be less likely to be used by those with certain birth control methods, the contraceptive injection may be used safely by women who do not have any known health conditions that could be treated with the method.
4. Contraceptive Use During Pregnancy:The Depo-Provera contraceptive injection should not be used during pregnancy. If you are using a Depo-Provera contraceptive injection, do not interrupt or stop the injection for 3 days after the date of your last menstrual period (if applicable).
5. Pregnancy Risk:Depo-Provera pregnancy tests can be done using the Depo-Provera vaginal bleeding test, which is a non-invasive method of contraception. If you have ever had a painful period after using an injection, contact your health care provider for guidance.
6. Birth Control:If you are having a painful or irregular period after using the Depo-Provera contraceptive injection, you should inform your health care provider of your medical history. They may suggest an alternative method if you are unsure.
7. Dose Recommendations:The Depo-Provera contraceptive injection is available in 2 different strengths: 150 mg and 300 mg. The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg. For pregnant women, this dose can be decreased based on the patient’s weight.
The Depo-Provera contraceptive injection should be used as directed by your healthcare provider.
Like other injectables, Depo-Provera works by releasing the progestin into your body. Progestin is a hormone called, which causes you to have a very low level of estrogen in your body. This helps to break down the hormones and release the progestin, which then helps regulate your body’s menstrual cycle and pregnancy.
During the menstrual cycle, estrogen levels are reduced, which causes the menstrual cycle to resume. This reduces the amount of estrogen that your body needs to produce and, in turn, helps your body make and release progestin. Once estrogen levels are reduced, the progestin in the blood is no longer needed to carry the progesterone.
The birth control shot contains two birth control pills (Depo-Provera and Provera). The pills are taken daily to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies. Each month, the pills provide the same effects, such as fewer headaches, menstrual periods and fewer uterine bleeding.
The pill also contains a contraceptive that helps prevent pregnancy after you get your shot. The birth control shot is a form of birth control called a Depo-Provera. If you have had unprotected sex, talk with your GP to see if you should use the birth control shot.
Depo-Provera and Provera
The birth control shot contains two birth control pills: Depo-Provera and Provera. Depo-Provera contains the hormone progestogen, which is used to prevent pregnancy and to help the ovaries to produce an egg, while Provera contains estrogen. The shot is taken once daily and lasts for three months. If you are using the birth control shot to prevent pregnancy, speak with your GP or specialist in fertility treatment to see if you should use the birth control shot.
The side effects associated with the birth control shot are very similar to those seen with other types of birth control pills. Most people who use the birth control shot have experienced menstrual changes or irregular periods. The side effects may be mild and temporary, and they may lessen over time as the body adjusts to the new medication.
Less common side effects of the birth control shot include:
The side effects of Depo-Provera and Provera are different. People who have been using the shot may experience:
